Voters in the Greene County and Paton-Churdan school districts will go to the polls Tuesday, Sept. 8, to elect members to their respective boards of education.
Voters in the Greene County Community School District will also vote on a $20 million bond issue.
Polls will be open from 12 to 8 pm in all precincts.
Voters in the Greene County district cast ballots at the Scranton Community Center, the courthouse in Jefferson, St Brigid Parish Center in Grand Junction or the Rippey Community Center/library.
Voters in the Paton-Churdan district cast their ballots at the Churdan Community Center or the Shriver Community Building in Paton.
In the Greene County district, candidates are incumbent Ashley Johnston of Grand Junction and John McConnell of Jefferson. Board member Jeff Lamoureux is not seeking re-election.
In the P-C district, voters will elect two board members to four-year terms. John McCormick is the only candidate on the ballot. David Palmer is campaigning as a write-in candidate. Incumbent Steve Burrell of Paton did not file a nominating petition and is not listed on the ballot, but has since started a write-in campaign. Incumbent Troy Paup of Churdan is not running for re-election.
Also on the ballot is Jennifer Maach who was appointed to fill the seat to which Greg Carey was elected two years ago. Carey resigned and Libby Towers was appointed; Maach was appointed last winter after Towers resigned. Maach is seeking to complete that term, which expires in 2017.
Douglas McDermott is a candidate for the merged Area V Community College District No. 9. His name will be on the ballot in both the Greene County and the P-C districts.
Voters can vote an absentee ballot at the county auditor’s office at the courthouse until Tuesday at 11 am.
The proposed $20 million bond issue in the Greene County district would provide funds for a $22.8 million project that would result in the district operating only two attendance centers, both of them in Jefferson.
An addition to Greene County Elementary on E. Russell St would provide space for all students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. New construction and a renovation of existing space at Greene County High School would create a complex attended by students in grades 5-12. Plans also call for a new gymnasium. The school district administrative offices would move to the 5-12 building.
The current intermediate school in Grand Junction and the middle school in Jefferson would be closed. The future of those buildings is unknown. The former south grade school (now the administrative offices and the home of the Greene County Early Learning Center) would be deeded to the GCELC.
The bond issue requires a 60 percent majority of voters for approval. The project is estimated to add $2.70 (per thousand dollars of taxable valuation) to property tax bills for the length of the bond issue.
